2) Khazan walk

Location: Ucassaim-Nachinola, North Goa
Start time: 03:30 PM

Activity Brief: The khazan lands adjoining this pond are fairly deteriorated, with one sluice gate non-functional for a number of years and the bundh in a state of disrepair. This has caused the adjoining fields and ponds to be inundated with saline water and taken over by weeds and mangroves, providing shelter to wildlife like aquatic birds, crocodiles and otters – which additionally benefit from the fish in the khazan pond. Look out for cormorants, darters and kingishers, as well as signs of otters and crocodiles!

Things to note:

-We will walk on a dry path/trail that runs around the khazan.

-The walk will begin at 3:30PM and will end at 5:00PM.

-During the walk, all participants should be wearing protective and non slip footwear, hats/caps and should be carrying sufficient amount of water with themselves.

2) Khazan and Salt pan walk
Location: Ribander Patto, Tiswadi
Start time: 03:30 PM

Activity Brief:
The khazan lands at Ribander represent the third form of khazan land use i.e. salt panning. These
khazan lands are called mithagor. The proximity of the khazans to the coast and the tidal influx of water make these areas conducive to salt production. In fact, some historians suggest that the name Khazan comes from the word kharsan which means saltiness. The salt pans are prepared by January, when they are flooded with estuarine saline water. This water then evaporates over a period of 2-3 months, and the salt is eventually collected in April-May.

Things to note:

-We will walk on a dry path/trail that runs around the khazan and salt pans.

-The walk will begin at 3:30PM and will end at 5:00PM.

-During the walk, all participants should be wearing protective and non slip footwear, hats/caps and should be carrying sufficient amount of water with themselves.
